After completing the Discovery Wheel and the Learning Style Inventory assignments which are presented by the text book Becoming a Master Student (Ellis, 2006, pp. 78-82), I discovered that I should trust my instinct now more than ever. I’ve always felt most confident when I had a chance to implement my knowledge and understanding in a lab or a real life setting. I learned that facts, figures, and examples are important parts in the way I learn. Breaking something down into smaller units and examining these units individually is something I enjoy doing, but that is not my preferred learning style. My preferred learning style is the â€Å"How†. In order for me to learn or memorize new skills, concepts, or techniques, I have to do them myself.†¦show more content†¦If the implementation process is failing, then obviously there’s a missing link or there is a part that I didn’t understand correctly. Being in the Information Technology field, I have to try something over and over to become good at it. In this field, it’s seldom that a person will learn a new skill and be able to use it for the first time without making any mistakes and even if he or she does get it done without any mistakes it won’t be as good as it would have been if it was being implemented for the second or third time by that person. Reading, listening, or even watching is just not good enough. Most of the concepts and techniques we learn -at least in my experience- are built upon other concepts and techniques. For example, you won’t be able to master the skill of division if you don’t master the art of multiplying and subtracting first, therefore, since a given skill is based on one or more other skills, hands-on experience becomes a must in order for a person to be able to implement that new skill as one cohesive operation. I remember when I was enrolled in an intermediate trigonometry class back in college. One chapter that I struggled with was called â€Å"Graphs of Trigonometric Functions†. We learned in that class how to graph a given equation using the concepts of sine, cosine, time, and angles. I just couldn’t see the purpose of doing such a thing. My Miracle Babby Essay On May 9, 2014 around 2 am, I woke up with extremely painful stomach cramps. I tried to use the bathroom, but nothing helped. I forced myself to lie back down. I was hoping lying flat on my stomach would help. Nothing helped, so that same morning I decided to skip work and go to see my doctor. I went to Sick Call located on Hanscom Air Force Base in Hanscom, MA. As I waited to be seen my stomach pain seemed to subside. When I was with the doctor I explained my symptoms and told how I felt (as far as my pain level). The doctor did some blood work and a urine test on me. I was told about 30 minutes later that I was pregnant. The first thing I asked the doctor was how that was possible since I currently had an IUD inside of me. I thought I could not get pregnant with one. I was instructed to go to the emergency room to have my IUD removed before it would cause further pain and the loss of my baby. ?As I drove to the hospital I started wondering how this was possible; how I could be pregnant. Baby two looked to have a huge bubble on the side of its head, which later named an encephalocele. Encephalocele is an opening in the skull where brain and membrane comes out. It very deadly for newborns and many times the babies don’t make it through the pregnancy. The only treatment is surgery which could be deadly for the newborn as well. After being told that kind of information I was beside myself (and so was my husband). My doctor advised me personally to terminate the pregnancy, because later it could become even harmful to my health and wellbeing furthermore, there was a ninety percent chance I would lose both babies during the pregnancy. My husband and I were told to take some time and make a decision. We were given fact sheet about unborn babies with encephalocele and IUGR. I spent every available second I had researching and researching. I talked to my pastor, my parents and friends. I even went to support groups for mothers with children with encephalocele and other disorders. My husband told me one day that he didn’t want to have to raise two children with possible major disorders while he already had two girls with no kinds of problems. He agreed with the doctor (to have the pregnancy terminated). At eighteen weeks along I went back to my OB doctor and told him that I would be keeping my babies and deal with whatever circumstances occurred. My husband was not happy with my decision, he kept referring to it becoming a hardship, and that it would put a strain of our marriage and the kids. I told him to have faith that God would make everything alright and that God won’t give us challenge we can’t handle. During my pregnancy at 24 weeks I came down with preeclampsia and was told to remain in bed until I delivered. There were times I would bleed and I thought I was going through a miscarriage. At 28 weeks while in bed, my blood pressure went through the roof. I passed out and was hospitalized for almost a week. On November 6, 2014 (at 30 weeks) I went into labor. By the time I reached the hospital my daughter’s head was coming out. I was wheeled in from my car seat in front of the hospital. Christian was in the hospital for nearly three months after his birth. Even though I lost my little girl having Christian in my life has been such a blessing. He is such a wonderful little boy who has fought for his life every day. Each day he gets stronger (and more handsome). I love that boy with all that I have. I am grateful for my decision to keep the pregnancy and never giving up. Through my son I have learned what true strength means. It doesn’t always occur on the battlefield as I use to think. Strength comes from within, facing those tough life or death decisions, putting my life and health aside and caring for my unborn babies, as well as my two older girls. Christian continues to prove doctors wrong with every growth period, his CAT scans shows he no longer has any brain problem, his skull and brain are growing at a normal rate and size. He is meeting every mile stone he is suppose to (for his age). Christian keeps me grounded and I’m proud to be his mother, Christian is my hero. I know I made the right decision and would do again if I had too. My family feels so complete, I mourn the lost of my baby, Christina every day, but I know she is watching over us all.

Frederick Douglass How did the early years of Frederick Douglass life affect the beliefs of the man he would become? Frederick Douglass adulthood was one of triumph and prestige. Still, he by no means gained virtue without struggle and conflict. There was much opposition and hostility against him. To fully understand all his thoughts and beliefs first one must look at his childhood. Frederick Augustus Bailey was born in February of 1818 to a black field hand named Harriet. He grew up on the banks of the Tuckahoe Creek deep within the woods of Maryland. Separated from his mother at an early age, he was raised by his grandparents Betsy and Isaac Bailey. Isaac and Betsy are not thought to be related. Isaac was a free man and a sawyer, while Betsy was an owned slave, but she kept her own rules. Her owner trusted her to watch over and raise the children of the slaves until they were old enough to begin their labor. She was allowed to keep her own cabin, and to farm food for the children and herself. It was not an easy job. While all of the mothers were busy working in the fields of their master, Aaron Anthony, she was busy watching over their infants. Betsy Bailey was quite a woman. She was a master fisher, and spent most of her days in the river or in the field farming. She was very intelligent and physically able bodied. Most historians credit Fredericks intelligen ce to his extraordinary grandmother. Douglass later recalled not seeing his mother very often, just on the few times she would come to visit later in his life. At the age of six, Fredericks carefree days of running and playing in the fields and came to an abrupt end. He was taken away from his grandmother to begin the toil and sweat of the field workers. Here he joined his older brother and sisters, Perry, Sarah and Eliza in the fields of Edward Lloyd. The slave head in charge of Frederick was the cruel cook, Aunt Katy. Although perhaps he deserved some of her wrath, being a very mischievous child, she was undoubtedly a little out of line. She took up a need to abuse him, mentally and sometimes physically. This may have sprouted from a resentment against his mother. One of Katys favorite acts of punishment was starvation. On one occasion when Fredericks mother had come to visit, she had committed a terrible deed bye interfering in Katys eyes. Later in life Douglass talked very fondly of his mother. He remembers her as having a natural genius, though unprotected and uncultivated. Douglass was also very proud of her literacy. He never knew her in his older years, however, because she died when he was only seven or eight. Katy also resented Lucretia Auld, a resident of the house who had taken a liking to him, who gave him food when she wouldnt. These were to her just more reasons to be hard on Frederick. After being caught up around master Lloyds house, Wye House, he was forbidden not to venture near there ever again. Young Douglass loved to watch the people, especially Lloyd. He was a wealthy former Governor of Maryland and a senator and also an ideal example of an exploiter of the very profitable slave system. It is quite feasible that the reason he was so interested in Lloyd was because of Fredericks lack of a father. In fact many historians believe that Lloyd may very well have been the father of this young mulatto. Douglass later knew that his father must have been white which was the only way to explain the light shade of his skin. After exploring the property on many occasions he began to spend time in the garden because he loved spending time with the fragrant smells and vibrant colors. Eventually he met with Lloyds young son Daniel. They became friends and Daniel began to smuggle Frederick in the house through the garden.
